Some bloodstock agents couldn't tell you how to tie your shoes. I've heard some of the dumbest things come out of their mouths. To be fair, I've learned a lot from some agents as well.

Thanks, Pete, you can be so gentle in your scolding. I was, I admit, shooting in the dark. We'll see, today, if Chosen Lady lives up to your expectation...

What do you think #726 will bring?

Chosen Lady was a steal. Even if she only has a couple more foals. She's beautiful and just has a lot of class and quality. I realize that 19 is considered ancient by sales standards, but a classy dame like Chosen Lady, who's been about as good a producer as you could want, was worth more than $170K. Her attitude was great, her disposition nice and calm. She looks younger than she is.

Not to go dramatically offtopic but a mare in foal to Smarty Jones went for 950,000. Holy crap. Yeah looks like his sales will be okay but is that reasonable? I mean if you got mares going for that high in foal to Smarty doesn't it figure the foals themselves would look good on pedigree alone? Either the mares are worth that much or the pedigrees strike people as that good right? Sight unseen on the foal even so unless they're crooked...

-------

F. Eugene Dixon, Jr. paid the second-highest price of the day -- $950,000 -- for the stakes-winning mare Solvig, in foal to Smarty Jones. Richard Abbott’s Charlton Bloodstock signed the ticket as agent for Dixon’s Erdenheim Farm.

Solvig, a 9-year-old mare by Caerleon, was consigned by Gainesway, as agent for the dispersal of Bentley L. Smith.

“She was a great race mare and Mr. Dixon was interested in getting a mare in foal to Smarty Jones,” Abbott said. “She has a lovely yearling filly (by Giant’s Causeway).”

Abbott said Solvig will be sent to his Charlton Farm near Cochranville, Pennsylvania, to foal and will probably be bred to Afleet Alex. Both Dixon and Abbott serve on the Pennyslvania Racing Commission, as chairman and commissioner, respectively, and Abbott said Dixon wanted to “support the home team.”
Sounds like she sure is getting opportunities to all the name stallions.

Hi Heidilady,

Solvig was a nice race mare, $800k in 29 starts, 2 G3 wins. She was 2nd in the Winstar Galaxy Stakes (G2) and unplaced in any race better than G3 otherwise.

Her dam, Incha (placed) is a 1/2 to Italian SW Idle Son and 2nd dam Idle Gossip was a SW out of the wonderful mare Toll Booth, but Solvig's foals will not have a high powered pedigree (other than herself) for 3 gens.

A lot of $$ for an unproven mare and sire where the main pedigree for 3 gens of the foal is the mare herself. She has a Giant's Causeway and a War Chant (how does this one look). Clearly with Afleet Alex in their sights these guys don't have a clue that they'll ruin the mare if all these unproven stallions don't succeed. Good luck to them.

Regards,

Pete

Thanks! See I'm Improving. I am working to try to become a Buyer's Agent. I also am a certified Equine Appraiser, but have found that there is so much more to this than just that course. I constantly challenge myself... go through catalogs, price what I can and then compare after they sell. I have been hitting the mark 80% lately. (I think if I'm within 10% of the selling price I've pretty much hit the mark).

Madelyn,

Could you take a stab at the stallion I listed under this thread:

http://www.pedigreequery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7573

He was pulled out of the sale, but I'm real curious what you think his ballpark sales price woud have been.

(You can PM me or email me if you want.)

Thanks,
Laurie
