Keeneland Day 1-some highs, some lows, some as expected-A Japanes buyer kept things interesting(they usually no show at The January sale.I think once beyond this 1st book they will get cheap and if there's folk's out there in the regional programs looking to pick up some reasonably priced mares start looking thru books 3 & 4
I thought #27 was a bargain at $2500-"Squaw Harbor" was a 14 year old daughter by Champion Sprinter Groovy and out of a Grade 2 Stakes Producing daughter of Sir Wimborne(1/2 brother to Drone). This mare has never produced a stakes horse but she may in one of the smaller regional programs-she's had 6 foals of racing age,5 starters,5 winners that have earned over $375,000 - she has a 3 year old filly by Elusive Quality thats a full sister to one that made $48,000 in 2005,a 2 year old filly by Alphabet Soup-most likely the modest price came from the fact of no stakes horses, aborted in 2005 and open in 2006 but then again for $2500 wasn't she worth the shot in a regional program where the odd's of breeding an outside mare that has produced the earner's of $375,000 comes down to nil and none.
#35 was a nice mare for the price - $3500 - this mare kinda' made you wonder as she was unraced but her 1st foal was born when she was 10 in 2001(1999 & 2000 she shows no report),She was sired by Sharastani and out of a daughter of Raise A Native - 2nd dam produced Grade 1 Breeder's Cup Sprint Winner Very Subtle-she's had 2 starters from 3 foals of racing age,1 winner with both currently racing-she has a 3 year old colt by Jade Hunter,a 2 year old filly by Distorted Humor and in foal to Newfoundland for an end of February foal - what would a Newfoundland yearling sell for in Indiana,Ohio or Oklahoma
#96 was beyond my means and was in foal on a very late cover to Dixieland Band but she did produce Colstar-Grade 1 SW of 11 races in 18 starts earning $1,053,056-she's a half sister to Montjoy - I thought it was interesting on this mare that she has produced 7 fillies from 11 foals and in foal to Dixieland Band for $67,000
#157-another beyond my means but in foal to Lion Heart on a mid-april cover-hard to believe she earned $504,000 and was the 3rd leading money earner out of her dam-she's produced 2 Grade 3 Stakes Placed horses,7 winners that have earned over $400,000-she had a 3 year old colt by Danzig last year that was Grade 3 SP at Churchill, she has a 3 year old filly this year by Fusaichi Pegasus,a 2 year old colt by Carson City,a yearling colt by High Yield and in foal for a late march foal by Lion Heart for $45,000
#189 was open and does have age against her at 19 - she was by Cozzene-she was a SP earner of $144,000 - she's produced 7 foals of racing age,5 starters,4 winners and 1 SP that have earned over $400,000-has a Silver Deputy 3 year old filly,a 2 year old colt by El Corredor and a yearling colt by Stravinsky - she's 19 and sold for $2200 but I have a 24 year old I'm watching right now that has her 2nd in a row in her belly after 3 barren years(it's a full sib to Fancy As)-she was worth the $2000 shot I took on her
Did anyone notice The Everest Stables Major Reduction Phase II Consignment - isn't a major reduction like a dispersal - I thought some of these mare's might be bought for a reasonable price but as it turns out 5 of the 6 were out's and the one that did sell RNA'd
#269-a 3 year old unraced filly by Rahy sold as a broodmare prospect for $12,000-her 2nd dam was Special
#343 at $5200 was a decent mare- Stakes Placed Daughter of Conquistador Cielo - nice female family of Cure The Blues and Sweet Roberta sold in foal to Cozzene for a mid-february foal
#366-daughter of In Reality in foal to Our Emblem for $4000-her 1st foal by Mining did make $76,000-decent pedigree
These are just my opinions but I think there will be some better buys in the days to come if your looking

I wasn't at the sale, but was she still infoal? I cannot believe she sold for so little, she was only a 1996 model to boot. I would have had her in a new york minute, oh well

Don't know if she was or wasn't but on some of these mares I've often been asked that and believe it or not most have been. That's the Keeneland Mystique-sometimes it's just sit and wait.A client bought one last year that was in foal to Carson City for $14,000-and the mare was a nice daughter of Salt Lake that made $87,000-I posted on another board one's that I have bought for clients that wern't flowery write home to mom mares but every one made my clients money.I have purchased a few blurbs(I'm human) for clients but on the average I've done quite well.Their there-it's often just a wait and see game for lull's in the sale.I like how The Bloodhorse prints on how well the sale has done over last year-personally this catalog is much deeper overall than last year was.I liked Pete's Secretariat mare at $170,000 in foal to Lion Heart(19 and a late cover) but I thought the much better buy for a nice mare in foal to Lion Heart was #157 in foal for a March foal for $45,000-not the producer of the Secretariat mare but still had qualities about her including a 3 year old that was Gr.3 SP last year.
Hi JCBloodstock,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the mares for regional programs. I also wanted to mention your execellent post about the sensibilities in the regional markets (that was in response to my post re: Nacheezmo). I hope to respond directly.
Chosen Lady (#137) I've written about. Dance Colony (#157) @$45,000 was a spectacular buy. I had three trusted 'eyes' tell me that #137 was a beautiful mare and none were asked to see #157 because I didn't want her @$100k. My bad - what a buy @$45k.
Dance Colony isn't the producer that Chosen Lady is, has fewer and less mature daughters and they're not visiting the quality of stallions. She's also not the producer that Chosen Lady is but she's an even better breeder - her 13th STRAIGHT foal and still in April (19th). What are the buyers thinking? Her pipeline is full with good (if not top) stallions and her first 8 have run with 7 winners along with 2 graded black-types.
People are NOT doing their homework! She's gotten sub-par prices - all with Mr. Prospector line stallions and solid ($500k) prices with Northern Dancer line stallions (like Lion Heart).
You bought Chosen Lady (#137) to get some daughters and build the foundation of your breeding program and you bought Dance Colony (#157) to make money.
Regards,
Pete

Pete, don't feel too bad about missing Dance Colony at 45K. Though she was listed as in foal to Lion Heart, she'd never actually gotten in-foal and was sold open. I'm sure that accounted, at least partially, for the lower price.
I went to see her because she's the full sister to the dam of one of my mares, and she was a big, beautiful, classy mare. She didn't look her age at all. If I hadn't already owned a family member I'd have been tempted to snap her up. Even not in-foal, I thought she was worth more than 45k.
By the way, so far we've bid on nearly a dozen mares, and been under-bidder on half of them. Would you like know how many we've bought? Zero, nada, zip. Sigh

I myself wished I was there but I had 3 expectant momma's and had to stay home(which was good since one did go and has contracted tendons, had to cast both front wheels and can stand on his own but needs help gettin' up every time he gets thirsty).You.might possibly check with Pete as I'm sure he may know someone at the sale that could act as agent for you-and definitely call Keeneland and get a bank letter of credit to them.I don't mean to single out Pete but he is the only one I know on the boards that I have heard is reputable and he is very well most qualified to refer you to someone.
As far as what an agent may charge can be anywhere from 5% to 10% of the selling price. Some charge expenses-some don't.
Hi LSB,
I do feel better aboiut missing her but would have enjoyed seeing Dance Colony keep her wonderful breding record intact, but $45k was then a reasonable price for her.
Ragsdaj, if you email me I can give you the name of an agent at Keeneland that I have had extensive dealings with, trust and respect for her attitude that all horses are important. She can tell you what you'll need to do to be eligible to purchase at the sale.

Pete

Hi Ragsdaj,
That's actually a good question.
Two people judging a horses' height will have 2 answers. Sticking the horse (putting a measuring stick) next to them can incite the horse.
If required to list heights, many would lie because they don't want their horse perceived to be a runt. The auction house doesn't need the problem or liability - so it's all up to the buyer's discretion.
The truth is that height is important for breeding larger horses that meet commercial demands and people love the look of the big horse but there's no evidence that small(er) horses underperform. It's all perception.

Pete
