Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the mares for regional programs. I also wanted to mention your execellent post about the sensibilities in the regional markets (that was in response to my post re: Nacheezmo). I hope to respond directly.

Chosen Lady (#137) I've written about. Dance Colony (#157) @$45,000 was a spectacular buy. I had three trusted 'eyes' tell me that #137 was a beautiful mare and none were asked to see #157 because I didn't want her @$100k. My bad - what a buy @$45k.

Dance Colony isn't the producer that Chosen Lady is, has fewer and less mature daughters and they're not visiting the quality of stallions. She's also not the producer that Chosen Lady is but she's an even better breeder - her 13th STRAIGHT foal and still in April (19th). What are the buyers thinking? Her pipeline is full with good (if not top) stallions and her first 8 have run with 7 winners along with 2 graded black-types.

People are NOT doing their homework! She's gotten sub-par prices - all with Mr. Prospector line stallions and solid ($500k) prices with Northern Dancer line stallions (like Lion Heart).

You bought Chosen Lady (#137) to get some daughters and build the foundation of your breeding program and you bought Dance Colony (#157) to make money.

Pete, don't feel too bad about missing Dance Colony at 45K. Though she was listed as in foal to Lion Heart, she'd never actually gotten in-foal and was sold open. I'm sure that accounted, at least partially, for the lower price.

I went to see her because she's the full sister to the dam of one of my mares, and she was a big, beautiful, classy mare. She didn't look her age at all. If I hadn't already owned a family member I'd have been tempted to snap her up. Even not in-foal, I thought she was worth more than 45k.

By the way, so far we've bid on nearly a dozen mares, and been under-bidder on half of them. Would you like know how many we've bought? Zero, nada, zip. Sigh

If a person did want to try and bid on a horse later this week, is there still time to get approved or would I need an agent? How would I find an agent and how much do they typically charge?

I myself wished I was there but I had 3 expectant momma's and had to stay home(which was good since one did go and has contracted tendons,had to cast both front wheels and can stand on his own but needs help gettin' up every time he gets thirsty).You.might possibly check with Pete as I'm sure he may know someone at the sale that could act as agent for you-and definitely call Keeneland and get a bank letter of credit to them.I don't mean to single out Pete but he is the only one I know on the boards that I have heard is reputable and he is very well most qualified to refer you to someone.

As far as what an agent may charge can be anywhere from 5% to 10% of the selling price.Some charge expenses-some don't.

I do feel better aboiut missing her but would have enjoyed seeing Dance Colony keep her wonderful breding record intact, but $45k was then a reasonable price for her.

Ragsdaj, if you email me I can give you the name of an agent at Keeneland that I have had extensive dealings with, trust and respect for her attitude that all horses are important. She can tell you what you'll need to do to be eligible to purchase at the sale.

really dumb question.....but--why in the PDFs for the hip do they NOT mention the horses hands tall?

Probably because I should be there standing and looking at it.

That's actually a good question.

Two people judging a horses' height will have 2 answers. Sticking the horse (putting a measuring stick) next to them can incite the horse.

If required to list heights, many would lie because they don't want their horse perceived to be a runt. The auction house doesn't need the problem or liability - so it's all up to the buyer's discretion.

The truth is that height is important for breeding larger horses that meet commercial demands and people love the look of the big horse but there's no evidence that small(er) horses underperform. It's all perception.
