F-T Midlantic Winter Mixed Sale

Postby LSB » Mon Feb 06, 2006 11:51 am

Is anyone else following those results? They're giving those horses away (when they can manage to get them sold.) What a shame for the sellers.

Now be honest, when did you see a winter sale that wasn't a cull sale?

Keeneland January. True most years, and especially true this year.

Point ... but Keeneland seems to be the exception, not the rule.

This was worse than usual. Check the median and average prices from last year and compare.

i saw that a mare by broad brush out of a maryland stakes winning mare only brought $1200?!? granted she was 16, but that seems awfully cheap.

It was bad and I am sure Fasig knew this was coming. The December 2005 mix sale was weak. Now the come back with an even weaker catalouge 2 months later and on top of that they had to deal with the recent outbreak of equine herpesvirus (EHV-1). They may have to combine both of the Mid Atlantic mix sales into one. It's a waste of time to have 2 in this current market.

The Kentucky sales have been just as bad.. the numbers pumped up by a few six figure horses but most of the rest pretty appalling.

The media keeps reporting "better than ever" and I keep seeing sellers going home with giant holes in their wallets. Next week at Fasig-Tipton should be interesting. I will be there Saturday, Sunday and Monday.. anyone interested in anything?

I have to disagree about the Kentucky sales, madelyn. I thought the Keeneland Sept. sale had a lot of holes in it, but the three breeding sales held since then (KeeNov, FTNov, and KeeJan) have been very solid. It seemed to me that the horses that deserved to bring good money, did.

Right now, after a year of strong sales, it looks to me like all sorts of breeding stock is being thrown into the marketplace with their owners hoping to cash in on a rising market. Not everything that's been offered has been worth a lot of money and buyers have responded accordingly.

Coming from the buyers view..I love the Midaltantic sales and would hate to see them combined into one. There are deals to be had and while it is awful for the sellers, they knew going into the sale yesterday that buyers were going to be sparse. I spoke with many consignors and they took their chances with plans to bring home mares that didnt sell, none seemed surprised by the results and they plan on selling next year. The EHV scare kept many people away and the # of outs was huge. I am thrilled to pieces about the 2 mares that we brought home and I know if the EHV scare hadnt happened at least one of the mares would have been out of my price range.

Hey Gerry, I'm glad you had a good sale! I know there were several mares there that--at least on paper--I would have been delighted to have. Which ones did you get?

dont slam us!

my first choice was Kerygma #74 and she is very happy with her new surroundings. How could I pass up a mare with a race record like hers, her Tale of the Cat was a nice Saratoga purchase and is currently in training with Tom Voss so there is potential still in her pedigree and Mr Nugget is being overlooked but he has a nice pedigree as well.

Mom had fun and got Prospective Bet #118 when I wasnt paying attention, but she is infoal to Go For Gin so I couldnt complain too loudly and WOW is she a big mare...must be at least 16'3 and her 2yr old winner last year is by Ops Smile so of course she is going to Cefis this year.

There were so many nice mares but my first criteria was that they had to be infoal and with a foaling date that I could work with...as long as I am foaling out 18 mares why not make it an even 20 right?!!!!

I wouldn't dream of slamming you. Besides anyone who can say

is definitely my kind of person.

Kudos to you for giving Kerygma a good home! And wow, what a race record.

One question: the catalogue lists Prospective Bet as Not Pregnant. I'm guessing that was wrong?
