well we do ours before 2 years of age because some horses get proud cut wich is when they think there stallions and will try to mate with the mares or become teritorial. but never before 6 months. It realy would depend on the situation.

I thought proud cut was when they leave part of the testicle so it will produce testestrone and give him more studly characteristics?

I have my first foal due in May and should it be a colt I was wondering at what age they become sexually active/reproductive? I only have my mare in my field and then of course her son (if its a colt) so I clearly dont want any accidents! I wouldnt want to geld too early because I dont want to make it taller! It will probably be around 15.3 anyhow and 14hh would be good for me but Like I say it will be kept with mum and I dont want to have him mounting her!

clafairy, you should have no worries... you will want to wean the foal at six months of age so it will need to be separated anyhow. Colts can get "active" in the yearling year.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
