Depends how early you catch it. We had a filly with a bowed tendon, we kept the leg bandaged snug 24/7. It helped with the bo, and now it'sbarely noticable, however it has gone on a year now. The same goes for splints, If you catch them early enough. Another horse threw a WHOPPER of a splint, we iced him for 3days and then bandaged him 24/7 (except for in work - we used excercise bandages), its been over a year but you can't see the splint unless you know its there.

Comfrey leaves are EXCELLENT for bones, soak them in a bit of warm water and then bandage them around knees, joints, hocks, splints or any other NEW bone deformaties.

Arnica is good for bruising, you can add tablets to the feed or Arnica Oil is a wonderful massage treatment (for people too!!!)

Mint is an appetite stimulant. (fresh or dried)

Hawthorn is good for horses with foot problems.

Yeast for general condition. (In some stallion barns here they add a pint of Guinness to the feed!!! - apparently the Stallions LOVE it  men hahaha)

I've got loads more but can't think of them off hand, but I'll put them up tomorrow!!! :D

For horses that are prone to tying up we use a Vitamen E supplement with Selenium, there's a very good one that's available through Orchardequestrian.com - they're an Irish company. It's also available as an injection - given IV.

Recently we started using an Arsenic based drug (for lack of a better word) on our horses that are maybe slightly under par - the one horse, he came back from a holiday and simply wasn't coming to hand - 2 months after his break and he still looked like a shaggy pony and wasn't putting on weight, not helped by the fact that he's a chronic windsucker!

Well our vet told us about Juracil (i think my spelling may be off) we put the horse on 5 days - 10mls per day IV and within 2 weeks he looked like a freaking show horse - he was covered in dapples and jumping out of his skin!!! It's now 2 months later and he's still looking amazing and has really come well with his work, his Jock is confident the horse will win his next start!!!!

Of course, while Arsenic is a natural remedy it does have a 2 - 4 week withdrawl on it, but its DEFINATELY worth it!!! Of course it also helps that the horse didn't have any other problems like ulcers etc.

About 3 years ago, I was researching tendon repair for a filly with lax tendons. From that I came across MANGANSESE (not magnesium) as a supplement that aids in the tendon repair process. At the time I had worked out the amounts needed and all in all the filly's tendons improved and she went from coon footed to normal angles.

If you google "Manganese Tendon Repair" you might come up with the same studies that I found. They were about tendon repair in humans, but the basics seemed the same. I found the manganese at the GNC store.

Tried googling this and couldn't find anything in english... any chance you could check the spelling? I'd love to find out more about this.

Thanks

It's "Jurocyl"....my spelling was way off. It's available from an Australian company called Nature Vet.
