Breaking from the Gate

Postby HR LLC » Thu Jun 29, 2006 7:16 am

I got a filly that wont break out the gate. She walks out or moves a couple of jumps after the other horses break. What is causing that and/or what is a remedy for this situation? The stewards wont approve her for a gate card like this.

Thanks.

Sounds like she doens't know what to do. You are going to need the gate crew to help you out with this. They are going to need to teach her to GO when the gate opens. One way of doing this is for a gate crew to stand behind the gate with a buggy whip and when the gate opens, wack her on the butt with the whip, this will tell her to GO GO GO. It might sound not very nice, but that is the only way to push them out of the gate. Also a good rider would be helpfull to try and coach her out when they open as well. With time she will come to understand to break, very rear are their horses that never learn. Good luck!
