Need Help!!

Postby Wayne » Sun Jul 16, 2006 3:04 pm

I fertilized a pasture a few days ago and then moved one of my mares there a couple of days later, since then she has not eaten any sweet feed only a little alfalfa. I am guessing that her lack of appetite has something to do with the fertilizer but I am not sure. I will be bringing her to the vet tomorrow but was wondering if anyone has any ideas what might be the prpblem. Thanks.

I have read that when you fertilize a pasture you should not put a horse on it until you've had one inch of rain to break down the fertilizer. Do you know if you had enough water on the pasture? Also I would call your vet right away and let them know if you think your horse ate some of the fertilizer.

Not to worry

The company that fertilized your field should be able to inform you if it was safe to put your horses right back on it. Lime and Nitrogen will not hurt a pregnant broodmare.
