old wound --are we ok??

Postby tammysinnett » Fri Jul 28, 2006 12:08 pm

Our filly had a very deep scrape to her hind leg, no sutures were given due to no flesh to suture. Ok the wound has healed over after several weeks of flushing with cold water, antibiotics(been off now for several weeks), dressings and then open air. My concern is to look straight on she has no size difference as the other leg but a side view shows a good size lump about two inches in length down her leg. She has a scab, very soft and when washed off I think it looks ok fresh tissue etc. When I palpate the area it doesnt really act like an infected area but I am concerned. I want to do everything to help her have normal use of this leg. until recently she showed no lameness....today she acts a little stiff....our vet treats her like a cow and the other is out of town for the week..should we seek a vet???How do you feel this will affect her life as an adult horse???Will it limit her job choices??? We are new to TBs always raised QH and Arabs. I do not want to make a mistake that would limit her life as a TB. In other words am I flirting with time while our vet is out???Can anyone give me some advice to care I need to be doing???Thankyou for any help!!

tammysinnet,

there is really nothing you can do than what you've already described.

keep the area clean and medicated with whatever topical your vet has recommended. If you have a rectal thermometer you might start logging her temperature. If it starts elevating she may need to be put back on antibiotics.

The the scar tissue area and where it is located will determine if it will present any athletic problems. If this is on a joint then you will want to make sure that this area is stretched, flexed daily as the wound is healing. Best time would be after the area is cleaned.

The lump could be proud flesh (granular tissue). It will heal a lot faster if you kill the proud flesh (you can then scrape it off with your fingers under running water). Use a caustic (sulfate) powder, being very careful NOT to get it on the living newly forming skin around.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

My husband went ahead and called the vet $80 for him to drive out here and watch her run down from the field jump over everything in her way and then be examined to be told she was ok.........next time I will write to you all and listen... she must have us wrapped around her little hoof!!!!! first time parents.....
