Gastro Guard for ulcers
Has anyone used Gastro Guard..I have a 2YO that we suspect might have ulcers..looks calm but internalizes..gets shaking in the gate...found an ad for Gastro Guard but thinking it's gonna be $$$....anything else?
I just put a weanling on a 6 day course. He is quite calm and happy, but he too internalizes things more than he appears. He lost weight and just wasn't doing. So put him on half a tube for 7 days and it made all the diffrence in the world. It is very expensive, but worth it. Now, since your filly is racing that's a diffrent ball game. A lot of people over here will give a course of gastro gard and then continue on a daily regime of ranitadine which is cheaper, but I would definitely try and get a course into her, well worth it. I'm really broke too, probably because I make sure the horses have everything they need, but if they have to have it to keep them healthy, I'm happy. Good Luck

Gastrogard is very expensive here in Canada. As an affordable alternative our vets have it compounded at a compounding pharmacy in Ontario. Omeprazole is the actual ulcer drug and a 1 litre bottle costs about $400, thats approximately 25 treatments at 20ccs per dose. Some vets say you can reduce the daily dose to 10cc/day after 2 weeks if the horse doing well, others say not to I think its very case specific.
