We were just notified that our maiden mare Perfect Colours cultured positive for staphyococcus ..

How does a maiden mare become infected with staphylococcus??

In a word......humans. We have it all over and if you don't was your hands then palpate a mare say, yea ok you gloved, but where did you touch the gloves??

She's infected in her uterus and I use a different entrance when I palpate.

She could have gotten it from being Inverted, If she is inverted have your vet give her a shot of penicilin in her uterus once a day for two days then sew her up. I just went through the same thing with my mare. Good Luck.

You should do a culture and sensitivity before treating uterine infections. An antibiotic that may have worked for one mare may not work for another.

If she is a maiden mare, she should not have needed a culture (intact hymen), and it most likely got contaminated outside.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
