Mud Fever

Anyone got a sure fire mud fever recipe? Got a horse that is getting better for two days then going backwards again.
Really starting to annoy me. Has been 3 weeks now.

Assuming that you can keep the horse indoors at night for a week or so, this has always worked well for me....

After coming in from turnout, scrub legs with nolvasan surgical scrub (leaving it on for 10 minutes works best), rinse clean, rub dry. Using a spray bottle apply Listerine (the plain brownish kind, not minty fresh!) liberally, do up in standing bandages overnight.

Both the nolvasan and the Listerine kill off the bacteria, you will find that after a day or so you can begin to scrap some of the build up off, but if you find that you are scraping and the skin underneath is bleeding, stop scraping for another day or two, the skin has not healed enough.

Diaper Rash Ointment on top of the Listerine will soften the scabs and help quite a bit. Also, if you apply it liberally before the horse goes out, it will keep the skin underneath from getting reinfected.

Thanks for your replies.

Was given a method from a local trainer yesterday that am applying from last night.

Apply vasiline or udder grease with bandages for a day or so to soften and allow removal of scabs.
Once scabs are removed apply Filtabac during the day and clean and thoroughly dry but leave uncovered at night (if inside) or bandage with clean dry bandages for the night if outside.

Will give that a go. If this fails have been told to try a mastitis treatment but that needs to wait till the horse isn't racing.
