Ohio State vs Penn State for knee injury

I'm dealing with a TB w/knee that needs to be operated on to clean up effects of an injury. W/o the operation, it seems that he will be permanently in pain.

I would like to give him the best shot at getting the best results. I'm located between these two centers. Does anyone have any experience with them or is one known to be better than the other w/joint or knee issues? Or are there any really good joint/knee specialists in OH/PA/WV areas?

I've left message at Ohio State to see who I would forward x-rays to there to get their opinion. It seems like I'd have to have my vet make a referral to Penn State. I haven't asked for that yet, I'm just starting to figure this issue out today. I have x-rays in digital form and can forward them for opinions.

Any help is really appreciated

We had a foster gelding a couple years ago who had bilateral knee chips removed and joint cleaning at Ohio State. I have never had a bad experience there but I do have to say Im a little biased as my friends daughter is a senior vet student there

We send all our surgery cases to Ohio State for our in state horses. We have always been extremely happy with the results. We have one boy who had a spiral fracture between his shoulder and knee....it was ugly. We were told to put him down. We sent him to OSU and he was there for 3 months. They did a fantastic job, he had to be immobilized tp prevent him from laying down. He is now home and walking on the Equiciser. Obviouslt he won't race, but he should be fine to ride in a couple more months. I highly recommend them.

OSU does a nice job as does a clinic in Apollo Pa Fox Run I ahve used them several times.

I think you mean Penn [in Unionville area just outside Philadelphia] not Penn State [in the geographic center of the state]. Penn State doesn't have a vet program or hospital.

While Penn does a great job, too, I'd think if OSU was closer, I'd want to talk to them, especially after the good recommendations. Penn is about 5 or so hours east of the PA/OH border, so you're talking significant extra travel, if you're in Ohio or west of there.

A lot of vets will refer you to their alma mater because they know the routine there. It doesn't mean a different hospital isn't as good, just means they've got personal experience with one but not the other.

When our colt was hurt last yr...it was either OSU or Fox Run in Pa...OSU was 5-6 hours from us and Fox run was 1 1/2...we were very happy with the work our horses have received at Fox Run Equine. Its nice to have a good clinic near by.

Kami dont forget theres also Valley View and a new Clinic in Rogers. I have only used the Rogers Clinic a few times but not for any Surgeries thus far...thank goodness. Though I hear the Surgeon Dr Bouchier hired is top notch! I believe she came from Tuft's U and was the ehad of Surgery there. Much closer then the other options.

Dr. Scott Palmer runs the NJ Equine Clinic right off 195 in Clarksburg, NJ. He is the best - he was one of the first docs to look at Barbaro as he was actually at the track that day. That is totally his and the clinic's specialty and they get horses from all over. It's a truly wonderful practice and not as daunting as NBC or OSU in size. Good Luck!
