Yearling diet

Postby tammysinnett » Fri May 18, 2007 10:53 pm

We have a yearling that is waiting at the farm to get ready to go to training....I would like to hear some opinions on what you feed your yearlings as far as body builders, supplements, etc.....Does anyone feed yeast???with their grain???We are talking about a filly in this case(in case it matters)

try and keep the diet steady and not change too quickly. Once training starts begin to waste for changes in weight. Dont worry about body builders quite yet, unless you see a dramatic change in weight. Body size will change naturally as the horse develops. Keep Electrolytes in their feed as a dressing. I always top off feed with a scoop of stress dex. I try and keep it as simple as I can when it comes to feeding.

This is simple, and it works:

Fat, Fiber. Not Carbs.

What does THAT mean?

Your yearling is a young growing horse. So the calcium ratio is VERY important. It should be, at minimum, at least twice the maximum phosphorus. If you feed a formulated pelleted feed, read the tag. The best ones are all-grain and do not have a lot of corn.

Good quality hay and clean water should be available 24/7, NOT alfalfa. Alfalfa is okay in a mix, maybe up to 20%, but it is too high in protein to feed alone.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
