good light blister

Hi,

What are you or your trainers using for a good light blister or sweat for your young horses?

Just something to stimulate blood to the ankles, etc.?

Just plain old cedar oil, you can apply very lightly. Works great. Smells like a hamster cage!!

How long before you start back training on the horse when you give the blister with cedar oil?

Blisters, firing, et al...
Debunked. If you had a sprain, strain or what have you, do you think having scalded skin over the top of it would do you any good?

well, I know in humans to break down scar tissue, therapy involving acid-soaked pads are used. They are connected to an electric curent and placed on the skin to treat scar tissue below.
Worked like a charm for me, on a 25 year old injury.
But the skin itself was not harmed, no.

Firing and blistering are two very different methods. Firing is intended to damage the bone, so that it builds back stronger. I agree. It doesn't work and is very painful.

A light blister is akin to strong linements, and is designed to bring blood to joint areas under the blister. It is not unlike Ben-Gay, only stronger.

Heavy, burn the skin blisters should not be used, and in fact, are rarely used anymore on most tracks.

With the cedar oil we usually will walk them on the Equiciser for 2-3 days until puffiness goes away, and then they are ready to work. I like cedar oil better than any commercial blister because unless you really soak them with it, it doesn't make the skin crack and peel. It just increases the circulation, the legs do puff up, but I haven't had any horses that were very sensitive to it.

You are correct, Amy. Time is the best in all these cases where joints are green and haven't "grown up" yet.
