TIE FORWARD SURGERY

Postby zort91 » Fri Sep 14, 2007 6:49 pm

Does anyone know the general cost for a tie forward procedure?

In Kentucky or Indiana.

We had one done at Purdue last fall. I believe it was around $1500 for everything. However we were unable to see the results because he broke his shoulder about a week back into training.

Was your horse evaluated on a treadmill prior to surgery? If so, was that included in the cost?

$1500 or so sounds about right, although I wouldn't be surprised to see it run somewhat more in KY. It's a newer technique but your basically going to be paying for the same services as are routine in a tie-back surgery: scope, anesthesia, hour or so of surgery, meds, and monitoring.

We had a tie back surgery last year in Northern CA.

Cost about $1000.00.

Cost of the treadmill is about the same as surgery, $1k, for a total of about 2 grand.

In our view, the treadmill is a waste of money. You probably already know they need the surgery from listening to them, and from their performance.

The cost of the treadmill was figured in. We did have to leave him there for a few days though. Because they have to work with them a few times before scoping while on the treadmill.

They did also say that they had done a Standardbred the year before and the following season he made over a $100,000. So he went on to pay his bill.

We just had a TIE FORWARD...not to be confused with a TIE BACK Here in Ohio and no Treadmill was needed as this was as bad a flipper as I have ever seen and her conformation was a good bit of the problem.

Proceedure ran us $1195.00 she stayed over night and within 30 days was back in light training. The vet who first scoped her after purchase saw her before and after the prceedure and his comments..."this is a 110% improvment...she might be a racehorse now!" This has been about 6 weeks ago and she is just going simply awesome!

Very trouble free as far as after care...just take temp, handwalk the first 2 weeks and then light turn out for 2 weeks and then back to training. Though the surgeon did say some of his stdbred trainers go back to training after 2 weeks....he did suggest doing that! :D

Hi Zort,
Are you aware of the Cornell Collar? According to Cornell University, who developed the procedure you are inquiring about, it is just as effective as the procedure, without the risk of surgery. TJ

many tracks will not allow the collar to be used...unfortunately.

Having used it...its got to be on PERFECTLY to work. So a little practice fitting is a must.
