Hi guys, i seem to be worming all around this forum for more advice lol.
My horse (2 yr & 5 m/o tb) has been started on strategy 14 since the begining of October so she can build her muscle mass back up, the 4 months prior she was on a sweet mix with not as much protein, she got up to a body score of 4 and wouldnt go up anymore, and with this last month of strategy she just finished off at a 5. How long should she stay on this high of protien?

i would add fat by rice bran, deffinatelly flax seed, and maybe hulless sunflower seeds. Calphormin is very good. then lots of excercise you will get more muscle mass that way that through protien. take a look at "Body Builder" the above is a cheeper alternative to that..just make sure you have enough fiber to make it a safe feed.. such as beet pulp.. good luck!

calphormin is a vitamin and mineral supplement..www.trmirelandinc.com..
it is a high quality product.
Body Builder is great, but costly I would look at Rice Bran, oil is best, or meal...this is what helps also with fertility in both mares and stallions and healthier pregnacies in broodmares. this is also what brings on the weight and muscle mass through "body builder".. Flax seed, or flax seed meal aid in this also

Rice Bran
On the other hand, rice bran products are invaluable as an energy dense feed, particularly applicable to the energy demands created by aerobic exercise. Because hard-working equine athletes are often unable to consume as much feed as necessary to maintain a high level of exercise, we need to find concentrated foodstuffs that supply calories without creating intestinal fill. Rice bran is one such substance that fits this criteria.
To give you a general comparison of caloric value of rice bran relative to other products, consider that 1 pound of rice bran is comparable to 1.3 pounds oats or 8 fluid ounces of corn oil. The fat in rice bran products is at least 85% digestible, but make sure the product you purchase is heat stabilized as the fat rapidly becomes rancid.
There really is no close substitute to feeding vegetable oil as a means of packing the calories and energy to your horse. Vegetable oil has been fed with success to performance horses for years by adding up to 10% of the diet as fat. In other words, a 1000 pound horse will readily consume as much as 1 cup vegetable oil twice a day added to some grain. If feeding rice bran, a horse can safely consume 1 cup (~ 1 pound) twice a day. Dietary fat is particularly effective in providing useable energy to horses involved in aerobic athletics, like distance trail horses or Event horses. It is palatable and efficiently metabolized to fuel aerobic activities.

I was always told Stradigy was a MAINTAINANCE feed not a growth and development feed. A client and good friend has her entire show barn on this feed and to be very honest even with her beautiful 2nd cutting grass alfalfa hay none of the horses in the barn look GREAT. They all seem to lack some kind of real muscle tone. These are hunters, and event horses...many ottb's and a few youngesters.
We feed 14% Supreme Buckeye pellets with free choice Alfalfa and Platinum Performance. Broodamres are all fat happy and even well muscled. My weanling colt is a little tank and all muscle cut from head to toe. Even my old gelding...retired now from Showing and an OTTB.
