Melonoma in private area of mare

Postby tammysinnett » Sun Jan 13, 2008 8:40 pm

We have a mare on our farm, she has melonoma nodules in her private area.....has anyone ever experienced this in breeding and what has the outcome been. Also is there anything besides removal that may decrease their size?? I am not trying to be funny but to give you an idea she looks like she has giant hemorroids.....thats what made me think maybe there was something that may help shrink thier size so breeding would be easier...the mare has been ok'd to try to breed with....just do not want to hurt her...she is very special...and she loves being a mamma.

"she looks like she has giant hemorroids"

other than having her vet remove them, you might try a rubberband. It's a techique used to get rid of hemorroids. Once the blood flow to the hemorroid is stopped it falls off in a couple of days. You might also try a wart remover. I would talk with my vet before attempting either of these things.

I would not try any kind of home remedy without having a vet look at her first. They could be sarcomas or melanomas. Sarcomas are viral in nature and can be completely cured while melanomas are cancerous and if disturbed the wrong way can spread.

I had good luck last year with a mare with an enormous sarcoma on her belly after she foaled. I waited until the filly was weaned and we did the rubber band followed by Indian Bloodroot cream and the thing is all gone.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

I assume you mare is gray. "Generally" these melanomas don't cause problems in gray horses. There is something the Vets are using to reduce the size of melanomas, it's Cimetidine tablets. I've not tried this at present on my mare but, ask your Vet about this product and treatment.
