Non-sweaters?

Postby fort_falcon » Thu Mar 13, 2008 2:09 am

How do you treat them? In the last week, 2 of our horses have come up as non-sweaters...the first one, Princess, had heat exhaustion on Monday (this week)...she had a trot - as usual - and went for a short canter (because she's on the easy list.) when she got back to the yard she was heaving, - really distressed - but not a drop of sweat on her....so, after about 25mins of cold hosing she relaxed, and her breathing went back to normal.

The other filly, Lara, has been having some muscle problems which started after her last run, we backed off her, gave her time out in the paddock, and she's had 3 sessions with the physio (in the last 8 weeks). About 3 weeks ago we brought her back into work, but not proper work - like on the tracks - I've been doing some flat work on her to encourage proper use of her hind-quarter, so basically, lateral work and flexions, up/down transitions etc etc....

Also on monday, my boss commented on the fact that the filly's coat looked very dull, and I agreed saying she felt a bit "flat" in her work - which up till then had been very good.
Anyways, on Tuesday we had a real scorcher...and when the horses got back to the yard - drenched in sweat...they all lined up to shower, and thats when my boss noticed that Lara hadn't a hint of sweat on her...NOTHING, her coat was dry dry dry...and all starey.

So we have had both the fillies drenched with electrolytes, and we're keeping them cool with showers on the really hot days....Is there anything else we can do for them? They're also getting electrolytes every evening in their feed.

Thanks,

Luck.

There is a product called One AC that I have used for years on my nonsweaters. The real trick to it is starting it before the temperatures get to hot, but you could give it a shot. You might also check their thyroid levels.

I second this...I have a bad non sweater and One AC works great for him.

try a can of non alcoholic beer, I've been told it works well. We had a filly this year that we thought was a non sweater and she would tie up after works. My trainer was going to start adding the beer to her feed (he's had good results with that before), but she kind of got over it before we got to that point (I had recently changed barns with her, it was more getting her over being lazy and not using herself properly, once she started going the way she should she stopped tying up and started sweating).

Hey, thanks for the replies....

Ascot Stud, I'll mention that to my boss, not sure if the fillies would eat their feed with it in though...Princess might, she's a real glutton, but Lara is as fussy as they come!

This One AC....is there a link I could follow to check it out, or could you tell me it's composition...we don't get that here..well, not with that name on it anyways....

Thanks again, FF.

Things I've heard and tried with varing success.
10+ cc of clenbuteral twice a day for five days
6 pack of European type heavy beer or ale four hours out of work or race
train on Ace
Use ONE AC
Pray for cool weather.

I've never tried the One AC stuff, never needed too. A Guiness in their feed everyday. Had a filly that didn't sweat a drop and within a week would sweat normally. It has never failed yet.

Thanks for all your replies!!! We pull the first string out at 4.45am so those fillies were pulling out then....The one, Lara has been sent away on holiday for 6 weeks....which will hopefully help to de-stress her a bit.
We're definately going to try the beer thing on Princess though - she'll eat ANYTHING...she's sucha little porker, which probably isn't helping her either...which is why she's on diet!!

Again, thanks SO much for your suggestions!
