Filly with a rectal hemriod

Postby karenkarenn » Sat Jul 11, 2009 2:40 pm

Hello
Has anyone out there had a horse that had a rectal hemroid?
At first I thought it was a massive concern, I called the vet to see her on an Er Case. Well she is eating, drinking and nursing, and sometimes popping. And the vet told me to wait three days to make an appointment. Well i did and he gave me this antibodic, steriod, cream that in a months time is SUPPOSED to take this away.. But somehow I just dont trust him.
Am i right to get a second opinion, maybe an operation?

Hi Karen, I was wondering how your filly is doing? I was thinking, I'm no vet, but that really doesn't look like a hemmorhoid to me....it looks like a little cyst or tumor. I think if you haven't already, you should get a second vet opinion.

Do keep us updated, though!

Hello
Bondama
I called every vet in within Winnemucca, Wells, Elko and they told me that same thing that it was a prolapsed rectum.
After several nagging calls from me to the vet, I finally convinced him to have it surgically removed.
Im just aggravated that I had to wait ten days before the vet took me seriously. I mean heaven forbid if it was life threatning.

I've never seen a rectal prolapse in horses, but I've seen both rectal and vaginal prolapses in dogs. Dogs don't have hemorrhoids. I'd be surprised to hear that horses have them. There is a big difference between a prolapse and a hemorrhoid. Prolapse occurs rectally by long term straining. Rectal and vaginal prolapse is very serious business. Surgery, though available, is not effective in canines, so I question it in equines. I've seen vaginal prolapses eventually evolve into rectal prolapses even after treatment. If I were you I would certainly seek some advice from a Veterinarian who specializes in the treatment of this problem. I've heard that in some cases the anal lining can be manually replaced. The treatment in dogs is the same Proctitis. A topical anesthetic is applied to reduce pain. The problem is chronic. If it is or becomes vaginal you will see fertility problems and chronic infections. Infection will initially be of most concern with rectal prolapse. I wouldn't be surprised either to hear that you are recommended to feed a very moist diet. I haven't a clue what to about a vaginal prolapse.

I wish you the best.

Today we take her in for surgery. I hope all goes well, if it comes back its off to the Idaho Equine Center in Nampa for us.
The appointment is three hours from now.

UPdate on Jeanie
The vet removed a growth/ mushroom tissue. It started as muscle and as she strained to poop, the muscle somehow came out with the rectum wall. It was cut. So the vet said that she is going to bleed for a while because there is a couple sutures and an open wound near the rectum. Its been very very weird. He told me that hes never seen this before.
