heel pain.

Postby trackgal » Thu Oct 15, 2009 5:06 am

Our recent OTTB seems to be suffering from heel pain, she is fine going straight, not really extending, kinda short strided, no head-bob, but going to the right she is very short strided, I know the best thing to do would be radiographs, but she was a rescue and the owner is short on funds,, what type of corrective shoeing might we try for short stridedness she really isn't HORRIBLE just alitle short strided..Thanks!

my first question is whether problem is hoof related. If it is, start with thinking "developing abscess" to "hoof bruising" to did shoer cut off too much heel (or toe) or laminitis. hoof testers might help here! good luck!

I agree. Are they soft and tender? If so that is fixable

Tuc,

Our shoer recently told our trainer that our 2 year old had soft and tender heels. Just wondering how you would go about fixing it?

Thanks!

Shoeing is a thought. Sometimes we set the heels so low that they take even more of a beating than an upright foot would. IF there isn't an abcess that is causing heel tenderness, you can paint the foot even the wall (not the coronet band) with Kopertox, ketatex, fomeldahyde (if you can suffer the smell and burn), Durasol... to toughen soles, heels and wall.

It could be navicular disease. This causes heal pain and the trimming recommendation is to leave plenty of heal. Radiographs would be called for to diagnose this I suppose.

Soft and tender isn't a navicular symptom.. LOL
Could be, though, I if looking at the horse and had hoof testers, and some BF specialists look at the horse, then I would head to pictures.. WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO

Navicular causes pain in the heel area and typically both feet are affected. XRays sometimes (but not always) can diagnose this problem. I'd start with hoof testers in both feet.

Thanks for your input on the heels, Tuc. I really appreciate reading about different treatment options, so thanks for your time and expertise!

In the colt's case, it seems that it was more a false alarm/overreaction than everything and all is well. Still, it's always good to learn something new!

I see this is solved but I would have asked if they were contracted, (the heels)
