turning out yearling fillies with pregnant mares

Postby slewyou44 » Mon Jul 12, 2010 11:22 am

Is it fairly common to have yearling fillies (planned for racing careers) share a paddock w/ pregnant mares? Does one have to worry about bossy mares picking on certain yearlings, or is it no big deal?

Numbers here significant enough - approximately 12 mares and 12 yearlings sharing a pretty good sized paddock.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Unfortunately, it's not my farm...

A buddy boards some of his breeding stock there and the integration of mares/yearlings is a new thing, maybe part of cuts associated w/ consolidation of operation down to smaller overall acreage. Just wondered if it was a fairly common practice, whether there were any pros/cons in play, etc.

Thanks for the reply!
