Hoof Packing

Postby Brogan » Wed Jul 28, 2010 11:07 am

Is it my imagination, or has the cost of Forshner's Hoof Packing doubled in the last few years?

What have others found to be a good foot pack (other than the obvious Bowie clay mixture)?

Magic cushion and magic cushion xtreme are the best.

Magic Cushion is a lot more expensive than Forshners...I just use regular clay leg poultice and slap some brown paper over it post race. Works great.

I thought the question was asking for good hoof pack as opposed to figuring out what is cheapest. Poultice is ok, magic cushion is awesome. Not even remotely close in my book. You get what you pay for. If you are just packing the feet to make you feel like you have done something then use poultice. If you are packing the feet because they are sore/warm whatever, then use something that will take care of that problem ie magic cushion.

Laurie, clay poultice works great for heat in the foot, I've used it for ouchy feet, noticeable heat, stone bruises, post farrier soreness etc and had just as much luck as when I used Magic Cushion. Don't get me wrong, Magic Cushion is a fantastic product, but for those of us on a budget or with lots of horses to care for, it's not very cost effective.

What do you use in your Poultice?

I took the question to mean what is something as good/as effective as Forshners but not as expensive.

When I make my own mud I use bowie clay, epsom salts and apple cider vinegar. Love it, works great to draw heat and swelling, and much more cost effective than Magic Cushion. Everyone has their own recipe. ;)
