Bute Bannamine combo for prerace??

Postby BillB » Mon Mar 07, 2011 7:04 pm

Was curious why both are commonly used...would think one or the other...wouldnt this tend to make the horse groggy?? Any negatives or is this OK??

Also ACTH?? this is a hormone..is this common for nervous horses..any side effects??

NSAIDs are not narcotics so there is no reason they should be groggy. When I first started out it seemed like every horse got bute, banamine and dex 24 hours out. You can't do that anymore at least not in any of the jurisdictions around here. ATCH is said to have calming properties.

I thought I already replied to this but let me add:

It is very common to give both bute and banamine for pre race. However, Bute does have a bit of a dulling effect on certain horses, but they are very few. In my lifetime in many big barns I have seen 3 horses that could not tolerate bute in any form (injectable or oral). In my experience those 3 horses were probably all ulcer horses, if it helps any to sort it out mentally. The late great Dr Art Segedy told me that injectable can upset a tummy as easily as the oral form.
