There's a large article about this process in this month's Discover magazine.

Seems like this process "calls" stem cells to the wound site. Where they do their thing with amazing results.

When stem cell treatments become more common, I think that a lot of horses will make these kinds of recoveries and some may race again.

Thorn Song did indeed make that "70% chance at becoming a sire". He bred 40 mares in 2011.

The major break through with the ACell company products is that the substance "calls" to the existing stem cells in the animal or human. No need to draw blood, separate, culture and then return lab grown stem cells to the patient. Minimal chance of lab contamination as the bandage is applied directly to the wound, or to the site of the damage.
