Born on Feb. 29th?

Postby karenkarenn » Sat Feb 25, 2012 3:21 pm

Hello, I didn't know where to stick this question so I will just ask it here. And if anyone objects, moderators please put it where it belongs.
My mare is bagged up and she is over due by quite a few days now what happens if the foal is born healthy on feb. 29th?
Does it matter?

It does matter think about it from a horse that has retired from the track.

The date of birth won't matter in the whole scheme of things, Karen, because as a foal of 2012 it will become a one year old yearling on Jan 1 2013, so not to worry. Also, a Feb foal is a good thing, no matter what day it is born, it will have a few months on its later born year-mates when it turns 1 in 2013, giving it hopefully some size should you decide to sell.

It doesn't matter. 365 days is 365 days. No one would care if an birthdate is listed as Feb 29th or March 1st.. Horses don't celebrate birthdays. LOL

Assuming you are talking about a TB it's birthdate is January 1 regardless.

No, I am talking about when they retire and when they compete at something else.

They are thoroughbreds for the rest of their lives regardless of their job. Their birthday is Jan 1. You are way over thinking this.
