Anybody know of any confirmed linkages to OCDs and genetics? I know it's a complex subject but I'm wondering if it could be passed on through the sire or the dam side? hence that sire that has a surprisingly low percentage of foals that run....

I've read several studies that say "yes." I'm pretty sure that I can't link to any of them because they don't allow public access, but I'll try one anyway.

thanks Kari. Given the widespread cost of OCD in TBs I would think there would be a lot of interest in this. Of course, what Ky vet would readily admit that new high$$$ stallion X throws a high percentage of foals with OCDs?

OCD lesions are inherited in canines.

If you go to websites for dog breeders and see "OFA certified hips/elbows" or anything along those lines, the "elbows" is referring to the Orthopedic Foundation of America's certification that the dog has had its elbow conformation graded. OCD lesions are the top reason for a dog not passing for elbow certification.

If I knew that a dog had not been OFA certified (or had received a failing grade), and a puppy by or out of said dog came into the practice with new owners, I wasn't allowed to say one peep. It's that darn client/patient/owner confidentiality thing.
