I have a gelding just disgnosed with Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis in both hind legs. I was told this condition is very rare, probably genetic and the prognosis is poor. Anyone have any experience with managing this problem or advice?

Sysonby,

I don't have any first hand experience with this particular problem. However, like most people in the business, I have too much experience with run of the mill suspensory problems. Several of my horses have undergone 'stem cell replacement' with truly remarkable results. Dr. Herthel at Alamo Pintado Clinic is likely the pioneer in this procedure and may be a good resource for you. I'd suggest calling the clinic and running this situation by him. He may want to evaluate the horse in person, or by studying the scans your vet has already taken. If your horse's condition can be rectified by stem cell therapy, you can expect a bill of $2-3,000. A small price to pay if your horse has an earning potential greater than that.

Good luck.

Thanks Michael. I'll look into it.
