I mix vinegar with some garlic and it works as a natural fly repellant. It's also very good for their coats.

Onalimb- What kind are you using that is causing a hair loss??
I use Be Free of Flies and it seems to work as well as any I have seen..
I also use Replex and like it too....
Are the gnats still driving your horses nuts?? I haven't noticed them as bad the last 2 days but before that OMG... my horses didn't want to go outside!
One of the warmbloods was jumping the fence to get away from them!

Have you tried the SSS from Avon? Works and smells ok too. Also...Equyss Marigold Spray works really really well.

Mix pennyroyal oil and anise oil in your hand sprayer and the fly will head out of town fast.
Use pennyroyal oil in your bath water and the flys will be history.

I just mix it with water so that it's not so sticky. I'm sure there's probably a better way. But that works for me...smells good too.

I have to ask...what is Pennyroyal oil?
If your horses have reactions to fly sprays...are you sure its the sprays and not a sun burn? I know with Absorbine the Sun will burn a horse some times who is wearing absorbine. Try applying a spray on sun screen and then the fly spray. You may also want to try a feed through fly contol suppliment. Though it won't keep the flys off of your horses it will cut down and the fly population!
