Might be a dumb question, but are you using the straw for bedding? I don't know of anyone around here that even uses straw. (I'm in Louisiana.) We usually use pine shavings. Locate a carpentry or wood supply shop in your area. They're usually happy to get rid of all their shavings (trash to them) and I'm sure they'd work out a deal with you. I've even heard of places giving it away. I've never used straw, but I'd think shavings would be a lot easier to clean.

What part of AL?

I use straw for my foaling mares. It is safer. We use sawdust/shavings for all the others, but not foaling mares. Maybe that was what Ruffian was wanting.

I hate cleaning shaveings stalls!! I would much rather use straw, looks more comerfertable too. Plus I have had horses that would eat the shaveings and colic...not good at all but with out a muzzle they would, also shaveings are too dusty.

LOL  Armpit? that sounds lovely. Well as far as I have seen the farm is to die for, and the town is small & sweet. But I'll let you know in a couple of months

I always bed on straw if I can, shavings are just too dusty & they are hard to dispose of, and they seem to get ruined extremely quick with youngstock.
And of course I'd never foal on shavings for numerous reasons that everyone here probably knows and swears by the same rule.

I have found a local - well Georgia- supplier, so hopefully that works out, but I have contacted the few KY/OH hay/straw suppliers, and even though it will cost a fortune, it's possible. :)

Heehee... wait til summer. You'll understand the armpit reference.
Invest in lots of shorts and make sure your air conditioner runs well.

That's better than here in Louisiana; because the Miss. River empties out thru New Orleans, it is very eloquently referred to as the a$$hole of America. However, that's also a dig at the 'classiness' of New Orleans.

I have a love/hate relationship with shavings. Hate the big chunks of shavings that get stuck in the pitchfork, like the sawdust-type stuff better. It is dusty. Never had any horses that would eat them, though. We have stall mats, so we need shavings to absorb moisture. I'd assume (but never used it, don't know) straw requires you to have very good drainage, which is something that doesn't exist in LA.

Anyway, maybe you could post some pics of your farm when you get some. I'm jealous already!!

What a lovely spot. I worked in lower Alabama for a couple of years.. lovely people down there. Don't know anything about Birmingham, though, except from LA it was halfway to Atlanta :D . Best of luck! Have you got a name for your farm?
