sole peeling off

Postby smilton » Wed Jan 25, 2006 1:46 pm

I got a mare off this site back in October (Haley G the giant dog :) ). Within a three days she developed an abcess that eventually (10 days even with 2xday soaking) broke out at the bulb of her heal. Now the sole of her hoof between the frog and the wall is peeling off on one side. She is not lame and she is getting the Winter off anyway because of the crappy weather. The tissue under the peeling section looks normal but I am worried about when it reaches the hoof wall. I was wondering if this is a normal occurance. I usually do the barefoot trimming in the winter (She has great feet otherwise) and the farrier puts shoes on the ones who need them in the spring/summer but I think he is going to get to see this one early.

Its not abnormal. A horse sheds its sole about twice a year and in my experience some sole shedding occurs after the abcess.
