Can anyone explain why breeders of yesterday were much more successful in their breeding program than today. So very few farms and breeders back then yet they were more consistant than any farm today.

Cause it was more sport and less money and there has been a disconnect between whats popular in the sales ring and what actually runs down the track

Very true. When you bred to race you have more of a stake
involved than just getting a pretty baby to sell that looks good and
run a fast 1/8th. (IMHO)
