HERE IS A CLUE TO SOME OF THIS...
Per the Brisnet reports, 3 of the first 13 horses that broke down were trained by Doug O'Neill. (Blazing Sunset, Simply Because & It's Who You Know) I hear he has TONS of Phalaris in his breeding
There were several horses dropping in class, with OBVIOUS "for sale signs" in the breakdowns.
I rest my case.
IMO, UNSOUND trainers and the Del Mar track are the "most likely" causes of these Del Mar breakdowns. I wouldn't run a horse there this meet. The turf course at Del Mar looks like crap, IMO. All but a couple of the trainers of the first 14 that broke down, would be on my personal DON'T USE list.

O neil, S(k)napp, Mitchell stand out...
I bet if we did have the stats on the DNF's and trainer there would be a shocking (to very few of us who work and play in s cal) trend.
Here's a scenario...
Boss says,"I want you to work this horse 3/4."
Exercise rider," boss, this horse is no good."
Boss,"It's feet sting him a bit. He had some bute. He'll feel better today."
ER goes to the track on the horse, tells the outrider , "I'll see you at the 1/8th pole." Works the horse, working good, so against better judgement asks the horse to finish. SNAP... was it Phalaris...? Nope. Rider knew, trainer knew, everyone who watched the horse train knew. Was it genetics... NOPE!!!
And I know that as I was that exercise rider. I have no excuse other than I was young, and needed th job. I'm not in that situation anymore, and in fact that was the last time I murdered a horse.
Louis, you are barking up the wrong tree. You go to the track in the morning often, and you see the horses train and the sore ones going around living on borrowed time. You can't for a second blame that on one genetic factor decades ago... It's just silly.

Actually make that two. Simply Because was trained by David Hofmans.

Then I should get my money back from Brisnet on that report
But there are no easy arguments to be made about the trainers either. The breakdowns have hit many different barns at Del Mar:
Playful Blint--Steve Knapp
Esroh--Paul Aguirre
Bonus Pack--Bill Spawr
New Joysey Jeff--Mark Glatt
Sheriff Jordan--Richard Mandella
Go Bye Bye--Sal Gonzalez
It's Who You Know--Doug O'Neill
Simply Because--David Hofmans
Ugotadowhatugotado--Bob Hess Jr
Geronimo--Eric Guillot
Kedington--Rafael Becerra
Ojai Summer--Lewis Cenicola
Yessirmychickadee--Tim Yakteem
Blazing Sunset--Doug O'Neill
Thinking Broadway--Patrick Gallagher
Chobigmoe--Mike Puype
Early Ronan--Gary Stute
I notice that Baffert's not on that list.

Isn't New Joysey Jeff the horse that was showing signs of "getting out" in two races prior to his breakdown? If so, I'd opine, the trainer, the track Vet and the Stewards are to blame MOST for that one.

-New JJ was showing signs of "something" bugging him late in his races.
-The Hess horse was taking a significant drop in class. Some thing like $50,000 to 16 or 12,500.
-The Mandella horse was actually I believe the son not richard.
-Most of these horses are lower to mid level claimers. With more than 8 starts this year. In several different barns. MAy of which push the envelope. Do more thorough research..
