Thoughts on Dalmary

Postby vineyridge » Tue Aug 31, 2010 10:23 pm

I know she was the dam of Rough Shod II, who is one of the greatest mares of relatively recent history, but were the rest of hers also quality?

She herself was half to Khaled, and was by Blandford.

Dalmary is actually very closely related to Blenheim.
I think the power of this family comes from her dam Simons Shoes. I often call this family "the shoe" family.
Dalmary herself wasn't the mega producer Rough Shod II became, however the descendants of her that included a strain of Blenheim are dynamic!
The Shoe family is one of the best ever. This includes Thatching, Big Brown, Godiva, Reform, St Jovite, Salem Drive, Lac Quimet, What A Myth, Roi Lear, Val De Loir, Valoris,Silken Glider, Allangrange, Condessa, Windsor Slipper, etc...It's countless and HUGE.
Thatching actually traces to Dalmary from her descendant Jennydang. This branch is amazing as well, from the already mentioned Thatching and also Lorenzaccio, Tudor Era, etc.
Dalmary is by Blandford and out of Simon's Shoes
Blenheim is by Blandford and out of a mare by Charles O Malley, a half sibling to the dam of Dalmary.
I wrote an article about this family about 9 years ago at Pedigree Post regarding Startac. If you want to read it, here is the link

A friend of mine has just acquired a mare from this family for sport horse breeding. Mare is from the Jennydang branch.

Her stallion has another, unrelated line to Dalmary--Achray, who was sent to Brazil-- and a line to Nasrullah. Otherwise he's closely inbred to the Twist line of jumpers. I haven't looked much past the first five, but the mare has almost all the lines that have worked for sport.

FF 5 is responsible for some very superior jumping horses, including both the sire and dam of Bonne Nuit.

I'm thinking from what you've written that this combination might produce some very athletic horses.

If you're at all interested, I can post links to pedigrees.

Funny that you mention athleticism because I was thinking the same thing. Not only for sport horses but also for other skills.
True story; I went to a Keeneland yearling sale with a friend(a buyer) and his trainer in tow..I looked through the catalog for an interesting pedigree. The trainer was there to judge the conformation of the finalists from the paper exam. He ended up buying a colt by Numerous that had many ties to the shoe family splattered all through the pedigree. Unfortunately the colt ended up injuring himself and never started. The trainer was bummed out because she felt he had potential on the track. The one thing she said about him was that he was an athletic SOB and very intelligent(once he became gelded. lol). Anyways, the owner had a good friend out west that owned a big cattle ranch and he ended up selling this gelding to him. The last thing I heard was that this boy was the best damn cow horse his friend ever had.
That takes athletic ability and smarts.
A happy ending for this gelding indeed. I wish I could remember his entire pedigree but that was about 9 years ago.

Gambetta is tail female to a NZ stallions who had two get that competed last year at Burghley, one of the two British 4* events. To my thinking that's pretty impressive. It's the eventing version of a Triple Crown racer.

Of course it doesn't hurt that Rough Shod II is by Gold Bridge, who is one of the best TB lines for jumping. Blandford, especially when combined with Bay Ronald, stands in a class by himself.

I have a mare from this line. She is a very big mare, but balanced - her name is Express to Boston.

What lines cross best on this family for racing?

The mare that my friend got is by Orientate. Her bottom line is totally different though, and wouldn't have the double to Crimson Satan. Her dam sire is Dynaformer.

She was a not special race horse. She broke her maiden, but also broke a bone that required plates and screws. That, of course, might have affected all later performance, and she did race afterward. Not sure how many of her races were after the bone break.

She had eleven starts and was in the money in 4, which is not a terrible percentage.

Of course, one Orientate does not a pattern make.

Your mare with Orientate gets an A+ true nick rating.
