the most common family numbers?

Postby Toccet02 » Thu Feb 24, 2011 3:34 pm

In my private injury database, I notice a lot of the same family numbers cropping up over and over for injured horses. Before I can "find fault with" that family, I of course need to have some idea of how common that family number is to begin with in today's T-bred gene pool.
Does anyone know of a resource to guide me along these lines?
Since it is known that "Chang" is the most common name in the world, someone must know if 1-n or some other is the most common horse family number. Seems to be!

Thanks very much.

The only reasonably simple way I can think of to estmate how common that family is in the contemporary TB population is to infer it from the number of TB sequences in GenBank that have the same haplogroup C2 mitochondrial DNA haplotype that's considered representative of the family 1 founder, which is 9 out of 72, or about 12.5%. That's an extremely crude estimate, based upon a sample size far too small to be considered representative of the current TB population. Some adjustment downward would have to be made because the same haplotype is found in descendants of Lady Alice 1855, who's family 16 by stud book rcd. Also it should be noted that a different haplotype has been documented in branch 1-u.

Some rough numbers derived from the Breeders' Cup data in the PQ database. It'll take me more time to get better data (i.e. % of BC starters from each family) but if you think it'll help you out, I'll see what I can do.

These are the % of winners from each 'main' family, ignoring subfamilies.

Family - Percent of winners
1 - 13.92%
2 - 6.70%
3 - 6.19%
4 - 7.22%
5 - 5.15%
6 - 2.58%
7 - 1.55%
8 - 5.67%
9 - 9.28%
11 - 2.06%
12 - 3.61%
13 - 3.61%
14 - 3.61%
16 - 4.64%
17 - 1.55%
18 - 0.52%
19 - 2.58%
20 - 2.58%
21 - 2.58%
22 - 2.58%
23 - 3.61%
25 - 0.52%
26 - 1.03%
27 - 0.52%
37 - 0.52%
52 - 0.52%
A1 - 0.52%
A4 - 0.52%
A5 - 0.52%
A24 - 0.52%
A29 - 1.55%

Thank you both for the very interesting replies. The rough breakdown by winners is pretty good.

Wonder if the huge difference between female family 1 and the rest is due to La Troienne?
