Family 4e has had some pretty nice runners over the years both on the flat and over jumps. Most of them descend from the chestnut mare, Romagne (1909) by the long striding Polymelus (leading sire in England 5 times). Probably the most notable runner from this clan was the 1940 Kentucky Derby winner Gallahadion, who defeated the heavily favored Bimelech in that race only to lose to him in the Preakness (ran 3rd). Bimelech went on to win the Belmont Stakes and 2/3rds of the triple-crown. Another fine combatant from this family was Satin Ribera (1977) who was G1 stakes placed and victorious in the Susan’s Girl Handicap. Satin Ribera retired with earnings of $535,311. The good racehorse and sire, Mickey McGuire had a modicum of success at stud in Kentucky where he sired the likes of the Gallorette Handicap winner, Mickey’s Echo among others. Other good ones who share this lineage are, Speedmore (2nd in the Wood Memorial), Ray Jay (Dwyer Stakes), Sunny Man (Saratoga Special), and the good producer, Two Bells, dam of Prophet’s Bell (Rosedale Stakes) and Spanish Cream (Santa Margarita Handicap). All-in-all, this is a decent if not spectacular family.
