Genetics question

Postby vineyridge » Sat Aug 25, 2012 5:59 am

I keep reading that 78% of all TB genetics come from 31 founder animals.

How does this compare with all horses and/or other breeds? Anyone know?

Morgans descend from one foundation stallion, Justin Morgan.
I'm not sure how many mares he was bred to, but he must be in the pedigree for the horse to be a Morgan.

Again, Figure 5, this study, gives you an idea of the amount of nuclear DNA diversity within the TB as opposed to several other breeds. That level is a rough indicator of how many founders were involved, and how closely related they were.
