JEWEL'S REWARD:
Champion 2 year old, tremendously talented, died of colic at four.

His sire was a non-winner in six starts; his dam was unraced.
Note the inbreeding of his sire, too.

Today's German Derby winner: LUCKY SPEED
http://www.pedigreequery.com/lucky+speed
Bettina, you may be interested to know that SPIRIT OF EAGLES (the dam of SILVANO, sire of LUCKY SPEED and so many other German SW's) was a California-bred mare who last raced at Turf Paradise in Arizona for a $3,000 claiming price. In my book she certainly didn't have the pedigree to merit exportation to Germany but it's obvious someone else did--much to their credit. The only possible explanation I can offer (more a guess than a reason) is that her sire (Cal-bred BEAU'S EAGLE) was a son of *GOLDEN EAGLE, who in turn was by the great stayer RIGHT ROYAL II. Perhaps a German breeder wanted some of that blood to cross onto his stock.
Do you have any notion why such a mare would have been brought half-way around the world?
