TORPENHOW
(1910)
By Torpoint
Family 8f

Bred by Washington Singer, and sired by Ascot Stakes winner Torpoint, Torpenhow was unraced as a two-year-old. At three she ran unsuccessfully in six starts under Singer’s colors, where her apparent mediocrity prompted her owner to offer her for sale at Newmarket in December of 1913. With the hammer falling at 150 guineas, her purchasers, The International Horse Agency, promptly shipped her to America as a broodmare.

In her new homeland, she bred 9 foals, 8 of which raced with 6 winners. Her daughters Herd Girl by Colin, and Summit by Ultimus (both sires being sons of Commando) gave rise to separate family branches leading to Torpenhow. The 2000 Guineas winner, El Gran Senor and Broodmare of the year Best In Show, both trace tail female to Torpenhow through Herd Girl. Epsom Derby winner, The Minstrel, and Nijinsky II, who won the English Triple Crown consisting of the Epsom Derby, the St. Leger, and the 2000 Guineas, trace to Torpenhow through Summit. The quality of these individuals certainly belies their humble beginnings.

TRIBONYX
(1902)
By Gallinule
Family 4d

Henry Greer, who would later be dubbed Sir Henry Greer, bred Tribonyx. The brown filly raced in the colors of A.W. Davis as a two-year-old and was unplaced in 3 starts. She apparently wasn’t very good since her last race was at the very bottom level. She was sold for 45 guineas at Newmarket in December of 1904 to E.H. Bird, and was subsequently owned by John Porter, until she was sent to France in 1907.

Tribonyx belied her own racing ineptness by producing the very good Willonyx from the cover of William The Third. Willonyx won 10 of 20 starts including the Ascot Gold Cup. He retired in 1912, and stood at Egerton Stud in Newmarket.

However, it's through her unraced daughter Hermosita by Ajax, that her heritage survives today. Tribonyx can be found in the pedigrees of such luminaries as Majestic Prince (Kentucky Derby & Preakness Stakes), Secreto (Epsom Derby), Real Quiet (Kentucky Derby & Preakness Stakes), and Bowl Of Flowers (CCA Oaks), as well as the sires Graustark and His Majesty.
