What does the * mean?

Postby lisamurf » Sun Jan 21, 2018 8:57 am

I am fairly new to interpreting pedigrees. I think I have the numbers down, but what is the asterisk for? Does it indicate elite mare? If so, what qualifies a mare as such? And why are some horses names in blue?

Pretty sure the asterisk means the mare has been identified by pedigree analyst Ellen Parker as a "Reines-de-course" or "Queen of the turf". Youe can see more at this link -> http://www.reines-de-course.com/reine-history.html

I don't think so. i.e. *Hawaii. Maybe a certain group of foreign (non-Us or Uk) bred?

Actually a green asterisk to the right of a mare's name does, indeed, indicate that she has been designated as a "Reine de Course". This is a designation for a mare who has been judged to have had an influence on the breed through her progeny.

I don't know why there is an asterisk before Hawaii in some references; it does not show up that way in pedigrees. If it was because it was not American bred there would be one on Silent Name (JPN) and many others.
