Hip 202 in the NY Breeding sale coming up is a chestnut filly by Precise End out of Vex by Kris S.

Question.

Top side of pedigree:
Precise End, by End Sweep, is by Forty Niner.

Female side:
1st Dam Vex is out of 2nd Dam: Abrade by Kris S. Abrade is a full to Forty Niner (Mr. P out of File)!

Is that unusual pedigree? I am new to the finer aspects of breeding, and would love to hear comments. Is it common? Expected? Unique? Good? Bad?

Thanks for any input you can offer...

Olin Gentry (who was responsbile for much of the breeding success enjoyed by Idle Hour Stock Farm and Darby Dan) used to like getting sibling pairs, especially brother-sister pairs, about the fourth generation of the pedigree. In this case, with the siblings sitting in the third and second generations of the filly's pedigree, respectively, he would consider it a little close to have the best potential for racing stock but a possibility for good breeding stock.

Assuming the filly is a good enough physical specimen to be worth considering for either racing or breeding, there are a couple of different schools of thought as to how her broodmare career might be best handled. One school of thought is that you would outcross away from the strains already inbred in her pedigree (Mr. Prospector and File) as much as possible while perhaps inbreeding to a superior strain somewhere else in her pedigree, such as Roberto or Northern Dancer. The other school would also avoid further crosses of Mr. P or File but would line breed to one or more of their ancestors, perhaps by trying to add strains of the families of Myrtlewood (ancestress of M r. P) or Courtesy (ancestress of File).

Go back to the well that produced those superior runners.

Forty Niner has Discovery (Fair Play) sire line in his pedigree. Discovery produced Geisha dam of foundation sire Native Dancer.

American Flag (Fair Play) sire line is to be found in Forty Niners pedigree.
American Flag produced Lady Glory dam of Raise You which is the dam of foundation sire Raise a Native.

The (Fair Play Sire line is an outcross for your double up of your inbreeding that you mentioned.
