a large crack!!!

Today I came home from work to find my mare who is four weeks from delivery lame in in the stall.... Rightfront.....picked her hoof and seems to look like damage to the frog. Thought she may be digging and somehow injured it ....called the farrier to get an idea....she is laying down most of the time these first 48 hours.....farrier here .....he chisels away and finds a v shaped crack where it looks like trying to heal....when he pushes on her hoof around the frog says it feels like her bone is not there and feels it is broke....this is on a Saturday....he chips away old scartissue, we spray with antibiotics put gauze in for support and wrap with grey duct tape on his recommendation......to call the vet on Monday. Now this hoof contains no heat, and no swelling. Monday after changing her dressing daily, she is starting to bear weight, only when wrapped.....Vet is out cant find athing except the crack.....We have been told when racing she could never change leads on the first turn....that is why they took her out...even though she was so fast out of the gate.....help where do I go from here....is this an old injury coming to a head due to her big size she has gotten with herfoal??? how could it happen in one day???should I fire my vet and farrier??? we are still wrapping with grey duct tape.....and she finally limped to the turnout to get some fresh air she wanted to run but she just couldn't.......we now have three weeks to go tll birth.....I feel so bad for her.....

I too would start with xrays, no point getting upset until you know what you are dealing with. It doesn't take much to make them extremely foot sore, often times it is much worse than it seems. Hope that is the case here.

xray showed us no break that he could see. Thankyoufor the website I wrote him just to see if he has a product to help...I am trying anything at this point.....today with her taped hoof I was able to finally get her to a place she could eat some grass and graze.....she will not pivot on it but she is starting to bear weight in small amounts when walking....poor baby at least she got out of the stall and enjoyed the sunshine a little. We brought her pasture mate out with her andher new foal.....I could just see the look in this mares eyes she kept nickering to the baby.....think maybe it will help her keep her spirits up. She is eating well, and her belly is gettting very big.....larger than her first foal last year. I can't imagine being that pregnant and having to limp..... one thing this flighty mare has sure learned to trust me....when she was first down I stroked her like the horse whisperer I helped her lay down and to stand....now she just looks deep in my eyes....it wrenches my heart.

I would try to borrow an "easy boot" type rubber shoe that you can put padding in to help give her support. The duck tape solution should only be temporary. This might be all you need until the sole heals.

You have 4 weeks to go for foal; I would probably look for a more permanent solution. Since Xrays are negative I would pack the sole with putty, and shoe the mare with a pad to cover the putty and Frog to help keep the sole dry. Your farrier should be able to do this.

I recommend the Old Macs boots, now made by the EasyBoot company. They are a little easier to fit, and come in at least 10 sizes to get a proper fit. They are velcro rather than a wire, but they have a good design so that they stay on pretty good as long as you pay attention to the fit.

in a pinch, i've used the appropriate size baby diapers and duct tape to wrap a hoof.
