What is it that makes Sadlers Wells such a great horse?

I meant more in terms of: is it his pedigree, certains ancestors reinforcing each other or certain combinations of ancestors, is it maybe also because of his mates, that he is getting the best mares there are or is he really improving the mares etc? I did not mean to say that SW is not a great horse.

he's from a super family, the 'Special' family (Arcipenko and Corinthian are recent exponents), by the greatest sire of sires ever and he met and defeated some truly great racehorses (only two of his progeny have ever been rated higher than him on the international ratings for three year olds I think)
He would have had a high number of good quality mares right from the get go, his sheer weight of numbers would have given him an advantage too.
He really is great... not real versatile though

Yesterday I saw his son Yeats win the Gold Cup at Ascot for the second time. Wow nice performance! He like Montjeu is out of a Top Ville mare.

How lucky you were to see that race. Yeats is a wonderful horse. I read that they might try to win it a third time next year. No small feat to win the Gold Cup twice. I think that Sadlers Wells gets some credit here for producing that degree of stamina and toughness and attracting that quality of mare. I am biased since I have a Sadlers Wells grand daughter in my brood mare band. She is probably as close as I will ever be able to afford to his breeding.

Northern Dancer and second dam Special are over-all strong influences, but for the particular virtue of the Sadler's Wells offspring over a classic distance or longer, I think you have to go to Bold Reason.
Not to be confused with Seattle Slew's sire Bold ReasonING (they were 3yos the same year - what was the JC thinking?), Bold Reason has been a very strong influence for stamina and bone, logically since he was by Hail to Reason, another source of the same. He was a half-brother to classic sire Never Bend and won the Travers and Hollywood Derby (10f dirt in those days).
Bold Reason provided the needed foil for the sprint/miler tendencies of the Rough Shod II family coming from Special.

There is no such thing as too much Teddy.
Not a bad one either: http://www.pedigreequery.com/soldiers+tale2
