Interesting Advertising on DRF

Postby Crystal » Wed Sep 29, 2004 6:47 am

Like Sam mentioned the porn link on the horse photos in the database..

Well I was a little off guard the other day when I went to the DRF.com site and saw on one of the side advertising bars, a nude blonde holding 4 playing cards over her chest.

Does this bug anyone beside me?? I admit you certinly have to do a double take to even figure out what they're advertising, but don't younger viewers visit that site? Is it really nessessary?

The use of scantily-clad (or unclad) females to sell any number of things that have little to do with sex is based on the well-known fact that the average male can see better than he can think.

Well, for some guys, seeing better than they can think is a temporary condition soon remedied by common sense or the wife's icy glare...for others, alas, it seems to be quite permanent. The latter seem to be the types for whose mentality the average commercial is designed nowadays.

I had to give up and get bifocals a couple of years ago, so I can't point fingers at anyone about poor vision. But cheer up, Colin -- they had some study or another a while back showing that some sorts of poor vision are associated with better than average minds. (I'll try to remember that myself the next time I bang into something because of my lousy close-in depth perception.)

Y'all think that is a joke, but there is a small kernal of truth to it.

We tend not to see our own gender (unless you are gay) when carrying on with our daily lives. First time I heard that, I thought it was BS. I was doing time in traffic school and when we got back from lunch, the teacher asked one of the women how many women she saw on the street as she went for lunch. "Dunno, wasn't paying attention"

Asked the next guy in the door "How many guys did you see on the way to Burger King" *crickets*

Next guy through the door "How many girls did you see going to Micky D's" Instant response. "Oh MAN, you should have seen this one ....."

It isn't just a matter of not noticing one's own gender, Sam. Men are hard-wired to respond to visual stimulation. Obviously, good upbringing modifies this quite a bit, which is why there are happily married men who don't give scantily-clad missies more than a brief look before turning back to their own wives. But they do look, no matter how well brought up, and you can't train 'em out of it; it's an automatic response. Showing pictures of scantily clad men to women generally doesn't have nearly the same effect, which is why advertisers trying to reach women tend to emphasize social and relationship concerns a lot more (for example, your family will love it if you buy this great product for them).

Something I found out by way of a very ... interesting ... comment one night with the ex.

It makes late night viewing in Vegas a waste of time. The ads for "Fifth Wheel Naked Dating" are getting a little old. God forbid they try to sell a car without some surgically enhanced blond in a barely there red bikini sitting on the hood.

Either it wasn't this bad in California, or I just never noticed until I got somewhere I loathed.

Wow, Sam. I've never heard of such an ad, here, unless it was a private channel or only late late at night or something. I may be wrong, but I don't think someting like that would get aired here in the East. Plenty of T and A, don't get me wrong, but not quite that blatant, on the hood of a car, etc. I don't know. Maybe I just go to bed too early to really catch anything anyway.

this whole thread reminds me of that new song "1985" .. I forget who sings it, a pop-punk band.. It's cute, but it holds a sting of truth.. "grow up and forget about the 80s"

'Bowling For Soup' is the band. I can't claim to be a big fan of them, but I gotta admit, that video's hilarious.
