At the very end of two full seasons on the track Abergwaun produced the performance of her career, winning the Diadem Stakes at Ascot in september from Apollo Nine, Sweet Revenge, Magic Flute, Ballet Francais, Swinging Junior and Fireside Chat. It certainly needed the performance of a lifetime from Abergwaun for all he opponents had good form, and even more important, they all appeared to have better form than Abergwaun with the possible exception of Swinging Junior. True enough, Magic Flute's optimum distance was probably a mile and definately six furlongs, while Fireside Chat, recent winner of the strongly contested Prix de Saine-et-Oise squandered vital energy by colting tt the start, but winning from such a field still needed ability of a high order. Abergwaun, ridden by Piggott for the first time, tracked the leaders until producing a strong burst that took her to the front inside the last hundred yards. At the post she was a head in front of the Spillers' Stewards' Cup Winner Apollo Nine, who beat Sweet Revenge by two and a half lengths for second place. On his next appearance, eight days later, Sweet Revenge gained the biggest success of his career when beating Swing Easy in the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp.
Abergwaun had shown useful form in Ireland as a two-year-old when trained by Collins. She won three races, including the Birdcatcher Nursery at Naas, and received 8-12 in the Madrid Free Handicap.
1971 Brought a change of owner and stable, and following a fourth placing to Ballet Francais in the Bedford Guineas Trial at Phoenix Park Abergwaun ran as her new stable's main hope in the Irish 1000 Guineas, in which she finished sixth in a field of seventeen behind Favoletta, and might have been closer than 8 lengths behind the winner, given a clearer passage when prominent two and a half furlongs from home. However, the race for the Guineas saw the end of Abergwaun as a miler. She was put back to sprinting and won both her races before to England for the Diadem. In a six furlong handicap at the Curragh in june she easily accounted for a useful field. Over a shorter distance on the same course in August she beat a slighter stronger field in the Philips Electronical Rockingham Handicap, winning a shade comfortably by a neck form her stable companion Abella (later the dam of Thatch, MB), who lost ground at the start.
Abergwaun is the second foal of Dugo, a minor winner at five furlongs and seven furlongs who was at her most effective at up to the latter distance. Dugo was sold as a five year old for 310 Guineas. Her first foal Souza Rose (by Songedor) won a five furlong seller as a two year old. Abergwaun herself was bought extremely cheaply, fetching only 750 Guineas as a yearling. Perhaps the fact that she was lot 2 on the first morning of the Newmarket October Sales, was partly responsible for her modest purchase price.
