Keenland Shakes Up Format

Postby Shammy Davis » Wed May 26, 2010 8:22 pm

Looks like Keenland is compressing the number of days for its September sale. First two days will be the select sale w/only 100 horsess sold each day. Thereafter, 4 days are scheduled for the 325 each. This was reported today on HRTV. Haven't checked the DRF to see if the gossip is getting around.

Me thinks it is a smart move because the market is getting thin. Some breeders and consignors might not be too happy, but that might insure more emphasis on quality.

I wouldn't be surprised to see OBS, FT, and the rest moving in short order to trim the fat from their catalogs.

Actually they're not compressing it, they're changing the format. The decision was announced a couple of months ago and Keeneland has been outlining the details in their ads.

Book one will be much smaller than in years past. Just 200 horses, 100 sold on each of two consecutive evenings. Book two will be bigger--four days of approx 350 yearlings each, catalogued by dam's name from start to finish across all four days. Then a dark day. After that, the sale will resume as normal.

The plan is not to sell fewer horses; it's to change the way that they're presented to the buyers.
