Do we have to wade through all the posts in a topic to see the latest postings? Or is there some way around that?

You can ask it to sort by the most recent (recent at the top). When you open a topic, it seems that the default sort is to have the first post at the top, and subsequent, later posts, following after. Open a topic, look at the upper right top of the box, just above the blue margin, and I think you can see a sort/scroll of choices.

Sorry. Seems that choice is actually at the bottom of the screen. Look around.

They should have a "first unread" button or something...

There probably is a way...I just can't figure it out.

Down at the bottom, there is a pair of drop down menus. One picks how far back you want the thread to show (posts that are 1 day old, 1 week, or 1 month) and the second one is sort newest first or oldest first.

Actually, if you look at the columns to the right and you see the name of the last poster in that thread...JUST TO THE RIGHT OF THAT is a little note or page icon. Click on that and that takes you to the last post in a thread.
