over due maiden

Postby onalimb » Wed Mar 23, 2005 5:48 am

Ok my maiden mare is 13 days over due. I know all mares are different but how long is to far over due, I've passed the anxious stage and now entering the little bit nervous stage.

I just got this info from the OSU Vet School as my maiden mare looked like she was going to try to foal at 305. OSU considers 320-380 a normal gestation. I also have one 13 days over that just started to bag, but she's on her third foal.

Don't feel alone in this. We are also waiting anxiously for our Steven Got Even foal to come into the word. The mare was due March 9th. Are there any old wives tales regarding the sex of the foal if the mare goes past due date or is early...?

Not the sex, but they say if you want your mare to foal, give her a beer.

Congratulations! Now if only my Mar 19th due mare would give up hers... if the size of the belly is any indication he's gonna be a bruiser...

Isn't the old wives tale that if the baby is early it is a girl and if it is late it is supposed to be a boy..? Just like the ENTIRE male population SLOW DEVELOPERS>>>

Our mare was due March 9... we are getting tired of waiting!!!!

My mare is day 294 and bagged up pretty good. Last year she apparently went early and foal only survived 28 days. I hear that once a mare delivers past day 300 that is isnt considered premie. Im crossing my fingers this little guy stays put for at least 26 days.

Vets say just to hang tough as they think she probably just bags early. No other signs yet but man does it make me nervous.

oh ya and BTW she is NOT GETTING ANY BEER!!!

My March Madness mare is still holding her colt.... will try the beer thing tonight and let everyone know if it works.... the mare with the early bag is just like a "mom" buying baby things the day she finds out she is pregnant... being Prepared... mares are each so individual. I have several who NEVER show heat, thank you very much to an old stakes winning gelding that hangs out and points them out to me when they are ready to breed. I have one that was just the sweetest, easiest mare in the world till that filly was born. Now the mare is all "teeth and heels, b____ on wheels!" Some will really work hard to communicate their feelings to you, others will only want you when they have something wrong... Some love to be groomed, others HATE it.. My philosophy is don't waste time worrying till you REALLY HAVE something to worry about, like a baby too small or crooked or a mare in obvious distress.

Anyhow, five are in heat today and need to be bred, so if I get killed .... best wishes to your mare...
