The problem with tracking rabicano is that in can be expressed very minimally. Also you often see sabino (or DW whatever) traveling with rabicano or vice versa which boosts the expression. I love to see such a wild one! I hope he is successful!

You can see his face is quite bay while his chest and hip are notably grey.

He is being pointed to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf race.

LUCKY CHAPPY, not a gray but a “roan” looking bay will compete in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile, on turf. Good luck to this eventual sire.

Thank you so much Bookiebuster. Wow Georgerz, that photo certainly makes one wonder about that possibility. While he still looks quite sabino
influenced this horse certainly should be tested for the benefice of all of us.

George, I had always believed that there could be no roan thoroughbreds, because there never had been, and it takes one to make one. Thus if "true roan" ever showed up in the thoroughbred, then the horse that exhibited it must not be a thoroughbred but the product of mixed parentage.

Then came Chappy. He is obviously thoroughbred. His parentage is documented. So what is this color, if not roan?

It has been stated on this board that he is not a true roan, but a rabicano, which is defined as a horse whose color includes white ticking at the base of the tail and often in the belly to greater or lesser degrees. Lucky Chappy is an example of white ticking to a very great degree.

It is my understanding (someone correct me if this is wrong) that a true roan is born with the roan appearance and does not change with maturity. This differs from a "grey" which is born some other color and begins to exhibit grey more and more with maturity. A grey horse may be born chestnut, for instance, and be registered as a chestnut, then begin to lighten with age.

How this relates to Lucky Chappy, I do not presently know. I would love to get a baby picture of him to see what he looked like at birth. I suspect he was born completely bay, since he is registered as "bay", and has been developing this grey body gradually. If that is the case, then he is not a roan, but something else.

I will let you know if I am successful in acquiring the baby picture.

P.S. - Lucky Chappy is being pointed next to the Dec 17 Cash Call Futurity at Hollywood Park. Connections wish to know if they have a potential Kentucky Derby candidate for next Spring, or if Chappy is strictly a turf runner.
