He so looks gray there. The roots of his forelock are even gray. Amazing.

It isn't true roan but yes he can pass the color on.

It could be real roan, but it would have to be a new mutation of it. I know that sounds far fetched, but actually mutations on that particular locus (the KIT region) are very, very, very common and as such it is very possible this could indeed be a new mutation of roan. I would still consider it unlikely, but definitely possible.

Regardless of what is causing it chances are high (IMO) he will pass it on. Whether it is extensive as his or not will be the question.

Did we ever determine what his tail head looked like?? I'll have to go back and read through again.

That could go either way. I've not seen many rabicanos that roaned and I have seen roans with that white of a tail. Intriguing. I hope he has offspring.

Most (if not all, I didn't look) are from Catch A Bird who sired the only 4 known roan phenotypes in the history of the thoroughbred. They produce like true roan. He was not a roan but probably threw a mutation. Unfortunately he was owned by a nutcase when he was breeding and no testing was done on him or those foals. This is how new colors often get started though, a mutation.

Otherwise the JC will often register anything ticked as roan. And sometimes they will register it as the base color. There is no rhyme or reason. Calling them roan doesn't make them so just as calling a rose grey a roan didn't make them one either.

At least two of the roans are in the hands of a race breeder in Australia. I wish someone could buy one and import it up here.

Who knows if someone brings one of these mares to America and this "sui-generis" roan-looking coat color may be achieved and preserved on this side of the Atlantic. Well... Lucky Chappy seems like a good talented candidate for achieving this.
